Clean, Green Things to do in Barcelona

Clean, Green Things to do in Barcelona

Barcelona, like many cities in the developed world is being proactive in the fight against pollution and poor air quality. Even though the days of heavy industry in Barcelona have long since passed the local geography, population density and private vehicle use are all factors which negatively affect the purity of the city’s air.

The Ajuntament, or city government introduced the first stage of anti-pollution measures in December of 2018 with traffic restrictions covering an area of 95 square kilometres of the most densely populated parts of the city. This means that on days where the air quality falls below a minimum level recommended by the WHO and EU, vehicles without a classification set by the Spanish DGT (Dirección General de Tráffico) will not be permitted to enter the restricted area between the hours of 07:00 and 20:00. As the restricted area covers almost all of the Barcelona metropolitan area inside the ring-roads of La Ronda de Dalt and La Ronda Litoral, it effectively means that older, more polluting vehicles will be completely banned from the city.

Anyone with a basic understanding and concern about the environment in general and air quality in particular will appreciate that while the atmosphere over Barcelona does not look particularly polluted, especially when compared to some other cities, even low levels of NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide) and suspended particulates can have a real effect on people’s health.

The levels of these offending particles are not yet at a critical level in Barcelona but they are rising year on year. I think it is commendable that the authorities have moved to tackle this issue before it becomes a major health risk and more drastic measures have to be taken.

Already the city of Madrid has imposed a congestion charge and no entry areas for private vehicles in the city centre.

In our own small way, here at Tourisimo Barcelona, we are doing our bit to assist in the move towards cleaner air.

Our fleet of tour vehicles are 100%, zero emission, electric cars. The fun to dive, Renault Twizy 80 is a two-seat, four wheeled micro-car and is very easy to drive. Quiet, nippy, and very stable they even feel sporty taking the sinuous curves of the roads through the Collserola Natural Park which overlooks the city of Barcelona.

So as an alternative to the city centre and its density of people, cars, taxis and tour busses, you can join the clean, green revolution and enjoy the best Barcelona sightseeing, views and photo opportunities while driving your friend or family member in your own little, non-polluting, eco-friendly vehicle and every little rabbit and squirrel of the park will smile and wave happily as you pass by.
